Canon Camcorder Apple
Canon VIXIA HV30 MiniDV camcorder for Apple users?

I am a Apple user and thinking of purchasing the Canon VIXIA HV30 MiniDV. From what I read it’s Mac compatible and works well with IMovie. Any Mac users out there that have expereince with this camcorde?. Does the editing work well with Imovie?
Also will I need to purchase a special cable to import movie to my computer?
Model i Mac 7 ( not a Mac Book) , Purchased in 2007. Using OS X version 10.5. And i Movie 7.1.4

All camcorders “work”… the issue is getting the video into a format the editor wants to deal with.

In this case, the HV30 is a DV/HDV miniDV tape based camcorder. It will connect to a computer with a firewire cable connecting the camcorder’s DV port to the computer’s firewire port.

Most Macs made in the last ten years have a firewire port. The current crop of MacBooks and the MacBook Air do not have a firewire port and have no expansion slot to add one – Since we don’t know which Mac you are using, we cannot know if this is a problem for you.

It used to be that in order for iMovie or FinalCut to recognize HDV format video, you had to do a custom install of the Apple Intermediate Codec – this is a QuickTime component installed from the system discs. Since we don’t know which version Mac OS (I presume OSX) or the version of iMovie or FinalCut you are using, we cannot know if this is a problem for you. iMovieHD 5 and newer running on a PPC G5 Mac or newer (including Intel-Macs) can handle HDV (and DV) just fine (presuming the AIC is installed).

Otherwise… it is fairly straightforward. With the camera off and the computer on, connect the firewire cable to the Mac and the camcorder. Connect the AC adapter to the camcorder and plug it into a known working wall outlet. Power up the HV30 – you need to be in “Play” or “VCR” mode. Launch iMovie. Name the video project file, select DV or DV widescreen as appropriate, locate the hard drive destination and click create or OK… iMovie’s blue screen will appear with “Camera connected”. rewind the tape, if necessary, (from the camcorder or iMovie’s controls) and when ready, “Import”.

Do not plug in or unplug firewire cable at the camcorder when the camcorder is ON. This is the fastest way to short the firewire pins and blow the camcorder’s DV port.

In this context, DV, i.LINK, Firewire and IEEE1394 are all the same thing (and they are not USB). No, a firewire cable was not included in the box with the camcorder. RadioShack, Fry’s Electronics, BestBuy – pretty much any decent electonics store should have the firewire cable you need.
