Is the Sony 1920 x 1080 HD video recording, 12.0 MP still image capture be obsolete soon to higher resolution?
Every time I buy one to replace my previous Sony HD camcorder their resolution gets higher, is the 1920 X 1080 resolution going to be higher soon? If so to what Resolution?
Not for video. The ATSC formats for digital television have no provision for anything beyond 1080×1920. The problem that broadcasters have is the bandwidth per television channel is hard limited to 6 MHz. Broadcaster are looking at multicasting, even when they have HD content, so they have no desire to push for more.
The 1080 limit was picked also because of the limit of resolution of the human eye. So anything more would just be salesman hype, you will literally never see it.
So as far as camcorders are concerned, they are still using datarates that are below broadcast. What i expect to see is improvements in memory card capabilities to at least 25 mbps so as to rival broadcast television HDTV, but right now they are stuck with about half that. Television gear is usually at least 50 mbps for SD video so there is a lot of room for improvement at the consumer level.
Some still cameras intended for pro use have more than 12 MP. I would like to see better quality lenses on consumer cameras so that they can actually resolve 12 MP and not just a blur at the pixel level. 12 MP should be sufficient resolution to print out a photo realistic Circus Poster size picture. If not, it’s not for lack of pixels.
